Supermarkets, shops of many kind and restaurants for any taste and budget can be found everywhere along the bay, and all-year in the city of Rethymnon. |
|
|
The nearest LIDL market with a rich choice of budget imported foodstuffs is located in the village of Tsesmes by the highway (7 kms). |
The following restaurants and tavernas reward particular recommendation:
|

|
Restaurant Kehaghias at Stavromenos
ranks as one of the traditional restaurants in the area of Rethymnon.
Existing since 1968, it was completely redesigned, modernized and considerably extended in 2000.
These measures resulted in a most comfortable parlour with 100 seats and a large open fireplace in it's middle. Natural stone and wood make the general view. |
In summertime the large sliding glass doors are open to give access to the terrace, which is roofed by a pergola with climbing vines and gives room to another 50 seats. From the parlour one can see right into the kitchen which underlines the traditional character. |
Furthermore, they use only top quality olive oil here, in accordance with the traditional customs: Even French Fries are fried in pure olive oil.
The emphasis is however still made by the full bandwidth of original Cretan cuisine, which in particular includes the traditional "mezedes":
These are manifold small starters which can also be easily combined to a complete banquet even for large companies. |
|
|
The small plates are passed around and everybody serves himself as it is the Cretan habit.
The Kehaghias opens daily from noon until after midnight, in summertime even from 10 a.m. as then one can also have complete breakfast here. |

Restaurant Levantes at Adelianos Campos
is easy to find as the restaurant is located straight on the corner of the "Old National Road" and the road to the village of Adele, so it neighbours the headoffice of Crete's leading car rental company Eurocars.
As the place is not very large, the volume of the menu is surprising. Probably the numerous regulars from all over the world are responsible for this as throughout the years they brought in their wishes and ideas. |
For local gastronomy it anyway means an enrichment as the Levantes is one of the few places in the region where one can e.g. get a decent steak - unfortunately during the tourism season only as in wintertime Adelianos Campos is closed. |
At the bar, Vangelis has the say. Being an oldies fan, he is specialized in cultivated cocktails and cultivated music, and one of the few locals who actually have a feeling for the sound of the Occident.
As the Levantes is open-air the loudness of the music has certain limits. Even right on the bar it is possible to have a talk.
Many people do so, and to arrive in time will guarantee one of the best seats. |

Grill Restaurant Mr.Gyros at Adelianos Campos
Nikos, the Grill House owner and chef, actually is not Cretan, not even Greek. He lived in Germany for some time and imported the formula for his spices mixture for Gyros from there.
He also produces the spits on his own, cleaning the meat carefully from strings and fat.
So predominantly tourists from Germany are of the opinion that Gyros here tastes like at home. |
At Nikos' they however serve not only Gyros but also many other things from an open charcoal grill, several salads and other dishes. And most of them here taste different from the ones that other Cretan restaurants serve, not only because of the spices. |
During the summer months the small restaurant is open daily from 10 a.m. till 5 o'clock in the morning, and during the winter months from noon till midnight.
You will find it by the western village exit of Adelianos Campos on the right hand side (when heading towards Rethymnon).
If you like so you can also have Nikos' specialties delivered to your holiday apartment or villa. Mr.Gyros has a very well organized delivery service. |
Attention: Mr.Gyros is NOT a fast food restaurant! Most of the specialties are not pre-fabricated and just waiting in a hot-buffet for the next guest to ask for them. Instead, they will be prepared fresh as soon as you call.
Please be aware that this will take some time! |

Restaurant Remember at Adelianos Campos
presents one of the most comprehensive menus in Crete. This ranges from matie fillet to Chateau Briand and all is of supreme quality.
Unfortunately it is open only for the summer as most of the tables are on the terrace in the open air.
Breakfast starts from 10 a.m. and the bar stays open until after midnight. |
|
|
|
|
Though the menu is very complete, at the Remember pizzas make the emphasis. According to the web designer's opinion, it anyway is the only place in the Rethymnon area where they serve acceptable pizzas.
There is a huge pizza oven fired with wood, and they let the paste rotate until it is wafer-thin.
Each single pizza looks rather oversized this way, but don't worry - everybody can make it. |

Taverna Kellari at Platanias
is one of the numerous small restaurants which string together in the eastern suburbs of Rethymnon. It also is not very eyecatching. The best way to find it is to ask in Platanias for the "INKA" supermarket as the restaurant is located directly opposite.
The difference to many other restaurants is that at the Kellari one will frequently need to wait for a free table, so it is recommended to call for reservation. |
|
|
|
|
In that case one should however come on time as on delay it might happen that someone else got the table. In a small restaurant like this there is unfortunately no other way of handling.
Stavros Karamanis, the host, speaks English, German, French, and some Swedish and Dutch. And Greek, of course. He comes from Cyprus and gained gastronomic experience from many countries before settling to Platanias near Rethymnon. |
The Kellari is open during the season from 10 a.m. until around midnight so one can have both breakfast and lunch here as well. Whoever likes to have a sundowner after dinner will also enjoy the Kellari's well-assorted bar. |

Taverna Stellina at Misiria is different.
Ordinary Cretan tavernas have white limewash walls, tube lamps, aluminum frame windows, and the personality of railway waiting-rooms.
At Stellina's, guests sit in small groups inside an oversized living-room which is decorated with old paintings, buffets, books and other things. |
|
|
In wintertime a wood-burning stove with a giant pipe provides a comfortable temperature, and the audience mostly consists from local people to whom the sound Cretan cuisine at Stellina's ranks as very popular. |
|
|
To those newcomers from other countries of Europe who built their houses in the area during the recent years, the Stellina ranks as a quiet tip as well. The more so as Nikos, Eva and Despina speak several foreign languages.
During the winter months, the taverna opens daily except on Mondays at 7 p.m. Who plans to go to Stellina's with several persons should call for reservation before as the locals love to celebrate their wedding, name-day and other parties at Stellina's frequently. |
During the tourism season, there is no day off. Original Greek breakfast is served from 10 a.m. on. |
